Frequently Asked Questions

Expert guidance on director payroll, dividend allowances, and Corporation Tax deductions.

Why is the £9,100 salary preferred over £12,570 for sole directors? ▼

Single-director limited companies without other staff are ineligible for the £5,000 Employment Allowance. If you pay yourself £12,570, your company must pay 13.8% Employer National Insurance on earnings above £9,100 (£478.86 NI). Setting salary at exactly £9,100 avoids all employer and employee NI while still earning full qualifying credits for your UK State Pension.

How does paying a director salary reduce Corporation Tax? ▼

Director salary and any employer pension contributions are classified as allowable business expenses. Every £1 paid in salary directly reduces your taxable company profit, saving you Corporation Tax at 19%, 25%, or 26.5% (in the marginal relief band). Dividends, by contrast, are paid from post-tax profits and do not reduce Corporation Tax.

What is the Dividend Allowance and how does it work? ▼

The UK tax-free Dividend Allowance is £500 per tax year (frozen until at least 2026). The first £500 of dividend income is taxed at 0%. However, this £500 still counts towards your basic and higher rate income tax bands.
