How KiwiSaver Compounding Works in New Zealand
KiwiSaver is a voluntary work-based savings scheme established under the KiwiSaver Act 2006 to help New Zealanders save for their first home and retirement.
1. Annual Government Member Tax Credit ($521.43)
For every dollar you contribute as an employee, the New Zealand Government pays 50 cents into your KiwiSaver account, up to a maximum of $521.43 annually. To get the full credit, you must contribute at least $1,042.86 (roughly $20 per week) between 1 July and 30 June.
2. Employer Superannuation Contribution Tax (ESCT)
While employers contribute a statutory minimum of 3% on top of your gross salary, Inland Revenue levies ESCT on this employer portion based on your salary threshold (from 10.5% up to 39% for high earners). The remaining net employer contribution compounds tax-efficiently inside your scheme.
3. First Home Withdrawal Rules
After being a member of KiwiSaver for at least 3 years, you can withdraw almost your entire balance to buy your first residential home in New Zealand. You can withdraw your contributions, your employer's contributions, the government contributions, and all investment gains—you must only leave a minimum balance of $1,000 in your account.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I transfer Australian Superannuation into my KiwiSaver? ▼
Yes. Under the Trans-Tasman Superannuation Portability scheme, you can transfer Australian super into an approved KiwiSaver scheme tax-free. However, Australian savings cannot be withdrawn for a first home purchase—they remain locked until age 60.
What is the difference between PIR tax and PAYE tax? ▼
KiwiSaver funds are Portfolio Investment Entities (PIEs). The maximum tax rate on investment returns is capped at a Prescribed Investor Rate (PIR) of 28%, which is significantly lower than New Zealand's top individual marginal income tax rates of 33% and 39%.
