How Sole Traders are Taxed in Australia
No Separate Tax Return
As a sole trader operating under an Australian Business Number (ABN), you and your business are legally the same entity. You declare your business income and deductions in the business schedule of your individual tax return, and your profit is taxed at standard individual marginal rates (incorporating the tax-free threshold of $18,200).
Quarterly PAYG Installments
Unlike employees who have PAYG tax withheld weekly by employers, sole traders must budget for their own tax. Once you lodge a tax return with business tax owing of $1,000 or more, the ATO will automatically enter you into the Pay As You Go (PAYG) installments system, requiring you to prepay your expected annual tax in four quarterly installments.
