How Goods and Services Tax (GST) Works in Australia

The 1/11th Extraction Rule

When an Australian price is quoted as "GST inclusive" (such as a $110 retail price tag), the tax component is not 10% of $110 (which would be $11). Because the original price was marked up by 10% (100% + 10% = 110%), the tax constitutes exactly one-eleventh (1/11th) of the gross amount ($110 / 11 = $10.00). The pre-tax net price is $100.00.

When Must Australian Businesses Register for GST?

Under ATO regulations, you must register for GST if your business or enterprise has a gross turnover (gross income minus GST) of $75,000 or more ($150,000 for non-profit organizations). If you provide taxi, limousine, or ride-sourcing services (like Uber), you must register for GST regardless of your turnover.
