How the Canada Child Benefit (CCB) Works
Administered by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), the Canada Child Benefit is a monthly, tax-free payment designed to assist Canadian families with the cost of raising children under age 18. CCB payments are recalculated every year in July based on the Adjusted Family Net Income (AFNI) reported on the previous calendar year's personal income tax returns.
Unlike the previous Universal Child Care Benefit (UCCB), the modern CCB is entirely tax-free. You do not pay federal or provincial income tax on your CCB payments, and they do not affect other social assistance benefits or GST/HST tax credits.
Families with AFNI under $36,502 receive the maximum statutory benefit. For income between $36,502 and $79,000, benefits are reduced by 7% (1 child) up to 23% (4+ children). Above $79,000, a lower secondary phase-out rate (3.2% to 9.5%) applies until the benefit drops to zero.
Because CCB reductions are based on Line 23600 (Net Income), every dollar you contribute to an RRSP lowers your AFNI. For parents with two children earning $65,000, an extra $5,000 RRSP deduction saves regular income taxes plus puts an extra $675 of tax-free CCB directly into your bank account (a 13.5% instant bonus return!).
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Child Disability Benefit (CDB) supplement?
The Child Disability Benefit is an additional tax-free monthly supplement (up to $3,322 per year or $276.83/month) paid to families caring for a child who qualifies for the Disability Tax Credit (DTC). It is phased out alongside regular CCB payments for families with higher incomes.
What happens if parents share equal custody?
Under CRA shared-custody rules, if a child lives roughly equal time with both parents (between 40% and 60% of the time), each parent receives exactly 50% of the CCB amount they would have received if they had sole custody, calculated using their own separate family net income.
When does CCB get paid every month?
The CRA issues CCB payments on the 20th of every month via direct deposit. If the 20th falls on a weekend or statutory holiday, the deposit is processed on the last business day preceding the 20th (e.g., in December it is typically paid earlier around December 13th).
