How HECS-HELP Debt Operates in Australia

Indexation vs Interest

HECS-HELP debts carry 0% interest. However, on 1 June of each year, the remaining loan balance is adjusted for inflation (indexation). Under the latest legislation, indexation is strictly capped at the lower of the Consumer Price Index (CPI) and the Wage Price Index (WPI), preventing the extreme indexation spikes seen in prior years.

Should You Pay Off HECS Early?

Because HECS has no commercial interest rate and repayments are purely income-contingent (if you lose your job or take parental leave, your repayments drop to $0), financial advisers generally advise against making voluntary lump-sum payoffs unless you are applying for a mortgage. For home buyers, clearing HECS removes a monthly liability, which can increase borrowing power by $40,000–$70,000.
