Understanding Australian Car Loans
What is the Comparison Rate?
Under the National Consumer Credit Protection Act 2009, Australian lenders must display a Comparison Rate alongside their advertised interest rate. The Comparison Rate calculates the true annual percentage cost of the loan including upfront establishment fees and ongoing monthly account fees. A car loan with a 5.99% rate plus $500 upfront and $10/month fees often has a real Comparison Rate of 7.2%+.
How Balloon Payments Work
A balloon payment (or residual) is a lump sum owed at the very end of your loan term. By agreeing to pay, say, 20% of the car's value at month 60, your ongoing monthly repayments are significantly lower. However, you pay interest on that balloon amount for the entire duration of the loan, increasing your total interest paid.
