Frequently Asked Questions
How do Deeming Rates work in Australia? +
Under Centrelink rules, the government does not look at your actual bank interest or dividend rate. Instead, it assumes your financial assets earn a statutory return called the deeming rate. For singles, the first $60,400 is deemed to earn 0.25%, and any amount above earns 2.25%. If your bank account earns 5.0%, Centrelink still assesses it at the low deemed rate, allowing you to keep the difference without reducing your pension.
How does the Taper Rate reduce the Age Pension? +
Under the Assets Test, for every $1,000 of assets you hold over the full pension threshold, your fortnightly pension payment is reduced by $3.00. Under the Income Test, your pension reduces by 50 cents for every dollar of income above the fortnightly income-free area ($212 for singles).
